Volkswagen Announces Big Things
Volkswagen had some big things to announce at their press conference on Monday, all of which were good news for those in Tennessee. The German automaker announced that they will be investing $900 million into their operations at their Chattanooga, TN plant so that they can build it's upcoming three-row, seven-seat SUV. The money will go towards creating an additional 538,000 square feet of space in the existing factory. Chattanooga will also become home to Volkswagen's new R&D planning centre which will focus on interpreting customer feedback and integrating this information into upcoming and existing vehicles. In the process, an additional 2,000 factory jobs and 200 engineering positions will be created. Volkswagen intends to invest more than $7 billion in the U.S. and in Mexico from 2014 to 2018. More

Volkswagen XL1 Concept
Automotive manufacturers worldwide are working hard to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. Some are motivated by government regulations, others by consumer backlash over high fuel prices, or simply to help the environment. Most of the bigger brands have at least one hybrid model in their line-up. A few have electric vehicles. Others are working to improve the weight of their vehicles and the efficiency of their engines. Surprisingly, the vehicle that is said to be the most fuel efficient production car in the world is relatively unknown around these parts. The Volkswagen XL1 gets 313 miles to the gallon, that's 133 km/l. To put that number into perspective, the Toyota Prius typically gets 44 mpg, and the Ford Fiesta 31 mpg. Volkswagen says that the car's emissions of only 24g/kg of carbon dioxide sets a new benchmark for vehicle efficiency. More

Volkswagen Micro Bus Retired
It's a sad day for surfer and hippie types, both past and present as one of the most iconic vehicles of all time is put out to pasture. Volkswagen has announced that it will cease production of the Kombi minibus after this year's special edition. More

Volkswagen Amarok
Pickup trucks are hot right now in North America. So hot, that Volkswagen is seriously considering entering the game, and bringing it's popular Amarok to Canada. So far most of the focus has been on big trucks, and the small and midsize segments haven't seen much action lately. Ford's Ranger and Ram's Dakota are being retired, and the others haven't seen a refresh for a while. Maybe a new entry into the market will shake things up a bit in the segment. Volkswagen says that they are investigating, but are proceeding very cautiously and slowly. Part of their evaluations include discussions with dealers, who are gauging their customer's interest in the pickup. More
